Soccer in Namibia
Like many other countries in Africa, Namibia is no different when it comes to the love of football. Soccer in Namibia is headed by
The Namibia Football Association (NFA) a member of football’s world governing body FIFA, since Namibia’s independence in 1990. Our National team
The Brave Warriors, ,played their first international match in 1990 and in 1998 Namibia qualified for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals for the first time. Ten years later Namibia once again qualified for the African Cup of Nations finals in Ghana. Namibia’s most memorable performances came in 1998 and 1999 when the country beat neighbours South Africa twice in succession, while Namibia’s highest world ranking was 68th in 1998. Moreover, Namibia is prepared to host pre-World Cup friendlies, pitting different countries against each other or against the Brave Warriors themselves.
Club football has a long history in Namibia. The oldest club, Tigers FC, was established in 1929. The Namibia Premier League includes 12 clubs. The development of youth and women’s football plays an important role as the NFA receives funds for this purpose from FIFA. In 2006 Namibia was selected as one of three African nations to launch a
FIFA Special Olympics Development Project aimed at achieving positive social change through football by building twenty
Football for Hope Centres for public health, education and football. Grass root development has taken off strongly in Namibia, as testified by the recent victory of the Under 17 footballers against their strong South African counterparts.
